Tan Tui

Daily writing prompt
What’s the most fun way to exercise?

Favorite exercises usually comes down to personal preference and even I like to mix things up a bit. I do get bored from time to time

That being said, for today and throughout this week, I will be focusing on the 12 tan tui that I learned some 3 decades ago.

As for what the tan tui are, they are a series of basic combination exercises that are usually required for further training in most of the Northern Chinese styles.

The term “tui”(pronounced like ‘tway’) means “leg” and the term “‘tan” means “lake”, although it can also mean “springy”. The practice focuses not so much on the kicks as it does on learning to transmit the force generated by the legs into the torso, then through the hands.

Think of the legs as being the shocks on a car, and you will get the idea.

There are a ton of videos on YouTube on the topic of Tan Tui and several written articles as well.

Good luck!
