February Flash Fiction Challenge

I have decided to take part in the Writers Digest February Writing challenge. For those who don’t know about it, the challenge is to write flash fiction every day for one month

Late to Work

I woke up with a start as soon as I saw my alarm clock had revealed that I had overslept. My heart started to pump harder as I jumped out of bed and rushed to the shower, lathered up, patted dry and got dressed as quickly as I could.

I grabbed quick bite and some coffee and headed to the car and started on my way to the office with a pit in my stomach.

After getting on the highway, I started to feel a little calmer, although I knew I would see my supervisor and she would look at me, glance pointedly at her watch and sort of glare at me, before moving on to something else. I was sure to get a good talking to along with an “occurrence” as they called it.

The traffic was actually fairly light this time, so that was good for me. I managed to make to the gold building 15 minutes earlier than I had anticipated, so all I had to do now, was race up 18 flights of stairs, quietly open the stairwell door, and make it my pod without her noticing me(useless, I know).

Just as I got to the stairwell, my supervisor met me on her way down. I groaned inwardly but she had a hurried and frantic look on her face as she motioned me to follow her. I saw other supervisors and managers and the whole call center team hurrying out the doors to the outside. As I got outside, I caught a glimpse of several news crews in the parking lot with their cameras focusing upwards. I thought about asking my supervisor about what was happening, but as I looked up, I saw.

There was some damage to the top floor of the building as if something had crashed into it.My coworkers were all in tears and hugging each other, while the supervisors walked around, taking a head count. I looked towards Katie, one of my coworkers and I asked. “Hey, what happened? I just got here.”Katie stared at me for a moment them pointed to her left towards the airport. “That happened! We were almost killed!”I looked in the direction where she was pointing and then I saw the remains of a wrecked plane, it’s wings burnt and crumpled like tissue paper, smoke still billowing into the sky.Katie looked at me again. “Be glad you weren’t here. Maybe someone was looking out for you”I breathed a sigh as I took in the scene.“Maybe so”, I agreed. “maybe so.”
